Skål is the modern term for "cheers" or "toast" not only in the three Scandinavian languages but all four Nordic/North Germanic languages: Swedish, Norwegian, Danish (incl. Faroese) and Icelandic. Skål comes from the Old Norse word Skál, "bowl" and still means that today in Swedish, Danish and Norwegian. As the Norse/Vikings drank from bowls, raising your bowl before you drank in company and saying "Skål!" (or skál in Icelandic) signified friendship, well wishes and good company at the table.
